Why the Best Time to Plan Your Next Year Is Before It Begins
There's a point every year, somewhere in the autumn, when the new year starts to feel close. A timely nudge to plan your next year.
Why waiting until January puts you behind
If you wait for the new year to begin before you decide what you want from it, the first few months are usually spent working it out. By the time you have clarity, spring has arrived and the year is already moving without you.
Starting to reflect now means you arrive in January already knowing your direction. Instead of using the first quarter to find your footing, you can use it to get going.
If you're thinking about your career
Perhaps you're considering new opportunities, a change of direction, or a skill you've been meaning to develop. Those things rarely happen by accident. They tend to come from a period of thinking, noticing what's working, what isn't and what you'd like more of. The months before a new year are a good time for that, because you can still look back at the year you've had while looking forward to the one coming.
If you lead a business or a team
The same applies, and perhaps even more so. Planning for the year ahead is often set against a backdrop of budgets and forecasts. Those matter, but they aren't what I'm talking about here. I'm thinking about the tangible things you want to achieve.
Is it growth? Is it building new skills within your team? Is it creating something you haven't built before? Whatever it is, give it time and attention now, before the pace of the new year takes over. Numbers are much easier to set once you know what they're in service of.
Find someone to think it through with
It's hard to see the bigger picture when you're standing in the middle of it. Whatever your plans look like, it helps to find a good partner to share them with: someone who will listen, ask good questions and gently challenge your thinking. Dreams said out loud tend to become clearer, and sometimes more realistic, than they were in your head.
If you're not sure where to start
Maybe you know roughly what you want next year to look like, but you're not sure how to turn those thoughts into a clear plan. That's very common, and it's often the stage where a conversation helps most. Having someone outside your business ask the right questions can help you see what really matters and turn a loose idea into something tangible.
If that sounds helpful, I'd love to talk it through with you.
So, whatever the year ahead looks like for you, what's your dream for it? I'd love to hear more
